Millstream Meadows

Food for Thought

The Millstream Meadows Mission

Our mission is to empower communities throughout North Queensland to reconnect with their food, nurture the land, and cultivate a sustainable culture of stewardship and abundance creating food security.

The Millstream Meadows Philosophy

Our philosophy around farming is pretty simple really...

We believe that nature knows best and when you work with nature rather than against it, you stop fighting battles and start creating healthy ecosystems that thrive and produce better quality food.

Some of the ways we work with nature include:

Avoiding use of vaccinations and antibiotics where possible

We have invested a lot of time and energy into learning and embracing the foundations of this philosophy and we love to share that knowledge with others.

The Millstream Meadows Story

In 2021, a simple swipe right started it all when we (Toni and Brad) first met and discovered we shared a dream to move from the Cairns suburbs to acreage where we could grow our own food and have a more self-reliant lifestyle.

2 years later, we moved to Millstream (just outside of Ravenshoe QLD) to a 4.5 acre property where we started growing fruit and vegetables, raising chickens for both eggs and meat, and pigs for pork. There was one thing missing though – beef! 4.5 acres simply wasn’t enough space so in 2024, we purchased a beautiful 99 acre property on the Millstream River and dubbed it “Millstream Meadows”.

As we shared our journey with friends and family, people started asking us if they could buy our produce and meat. The more we learnt about food security (or lack thereof), the standard industry practices of factory farming, and the nutritional disparity between what is available in the supermarket and what is naturally grown and fresh, the more we were drawn to sharing that with others.

Millstream Meadows is about more than just great food. It’s about reconnecting with the origins of our food – what our food consumes, how it is treated and what is done to it in order to make it to the plate.

The Millstream Meadows People

Brad is the guy that keeps things ticking along on the farm and brings the “Meat and Greet” to your doorstep. As a diesel fitter by trade, he manages all things mechanical, plumbing, fencing, and heavy lifting around the farm.

I’m Toni, the office wizard in charge of anything that requires sitting in front of a computer. Formerly a travel agent, I’ve been successfully running, Kickass Marketing – my own one-woman marketing agency since 2020. I’m also the food lady around the farm so the animals tend to get a bit excited when they see me!

We share a love of food, nerding out over soil health and natural animal care videos, and enjoying the beautiful piece of paradise we have the privilege of calling home.

Here's what's important to us

Ecology

Every living thing has a role to play in a bigger picture and when we choose to respect and honour the things that make each being unique (ie. The pigness of the pig), we create harmonious abundance. Ecology is creating wins for self, family, society, and planet at the same time.

Sustainability

Closely tied to ecology, sustainability to us is about longevity. Our farm practices, relationships and business practices, are all designed to be sustainable for us, our customers, and our environment.

Education

We are always seeking to learn and love to share the knowledge we gain with others. Helping others to live a life more connected to their food and the land lights us up.

Quality

We pride ourselves on offering quality products and services that enrich the lives of our customers. Ensuring we deliver value for money without sacrificing on quality standards drives us to be better.

Food Security & Lower Food Miles

Now more than ever, food security needs to be a consideration for every family. When a large amount of rain can close roads for weeks at a time, it is not good practice to be reliant on shipping food from Brisbane to Cairns. Imagine if local food was grown and sold locally without having to travel thousands of kilometres first – the food would be fresher, more reliable, and small businesses would thrive rather than the large chains making billions in profits. That’s the food future we should be aiming for.

Connection

Connection with people and community. Connection with nature. Connection with animals. Connection with food. We are passionate about creating and maintaining these connections in a variety of ways.
